Apparently, now that he has gone Hollywood, Blake Shelton has forgotten everything that happened before. In a spectacular career swan dive, the singer has managed to comment on fans traditional country music (Remember? The stuff he was singing about in ‘Hillbilly Bone’?) by calling them “old farts” and “jackass.”

The website Saving Country Music jumped on this, and quotes Shelton as having said in a GAC interview:

If I am “Male Vocalist of the Year” that must mean that I’m one of those people now that gets to decide if it moves forward and if it moves on. Country music has to evolve in order to survive. Nobody wants to listen to their grandpa’s music. And I don’t care how many of these old farts around Nashville going, “My God, that ain’t country!” Well that’s because you don’t buy records anymore, jackass. The kids do, and they don’t want to buy the music you were buying.

No Blake, no. If that’s what you think comes with being Male Vocalist, or any other country music award, you don’t deserve them. Those awards come with the responsibility to represent the genre that gave you your career. They come with the responsibility to respect those who came before you, your peers, and most especially your fans. It does not mean you get to decide anything of any kind about where the genre goes next. That decision belongs to the fans, and to them alone.

I suppose now that you’re rich and famous, and going to all the cool Hollywood parties, you think you don’t have to respect all that people like Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Emmylou Harris, Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton and many more have done…but it sure be cool if you did!

Country legend Ray Price already issued a rebuttal via facebook:

It’s a shame that I have spend 63 years in this business trying to introduce music to a larger audience and to make it easier for the younger artists who are coming behind me. Every now and then some young artist will record a rock and roll type song , have a hit first time out with kids only. This is why you see stars come with a few hits only and then just fade away believing they are God’s answer to the world. This guy sounds like in his own mind that his head is so large no hat ever made will fit him. Stupidity Reigns Supreme!!!!!!! Ray Price (CHIEF “OLD FART” & JACKASS”) ” P.S. YOU SHOULD BE SO LUCKY AS US OLD-TIMERS. CHECK BACK IN 63 YEARS (THE YEAR 2075) AND LET US KNOW HOW YOUR NAME AND YOUR MUSIC WILL BE REMEMBERED. – Ray Price

Until I see a sincere, and truly grovelling apology, I am not wasting any more digital space here on Shelton’s music.

After thought: you know how in sports the governing bodies strip athletes or teams of any accolades they later on show to not have deserved? Can country music do that too, please? Can they take away his CMA and ACM Awards? I also really wouldn’t be opposed to the Opry kicking him out until he can redeem himself for this.

Blake, don’t confuse “evolve” with “sellout”. You could have saved a ton of grief and just said you “sold out” to make whatever music sells to teenagers. You haven’t evolved country music, Ray Price, Waylon Jennings, Garth Brooks evolved it, you are just cashing in.
Funny how falling feels like flying, eh? You’re falling pal.

      Excellent point!

“Funny how falling feels like flying”, ironically written by Gary Nicholson, one of those “old farts” songwriters… :)

Blake does have a sarcastic sense of humor that will at times result in people getting offended. This quote is condescending to the older fans, whom during their younger days paid their hard earned dollars on the olden day’s style of country music. That doesn’t make them old farts. I see a lot of these days paying a lot of money for tickets to country music concerts of today’s artists on tour, simply because they LOVE country music, not whom is at the top of the record sales charts.

I think Blake has gotten too big for his britches since he has been on the Voice and I have become disenchanted with the whole thing. He called me and millions of seniors “Old Farts” and whomever he was addressing “Jackass”. Well he is the “JACKASS” and I have lost any respect I may have had for him. People do NOT forget the hateful, hurtful remarks you make. It will bite you where it hurts the most! You come off sounding like a jerk.

Well, I’m real disapointed with Blake. Since he’s been on the voice, and gone Hollywood, he’s turned into an egotistical person. Those fans are the people that made you. I wonder how Miranda feels, she’s pretty crude too. I won’t be listening to his music anymore, due to lack of respect for others.
